This video was recorded in Chennai after wrapped up yet another successful session on stage at National Achiever’s Congress with Brian Tracy.
Today, I’m going to be sharing with you on how you can deliver a world-class presentation: whether it’s one-on-one, one-on-five, one-on-1000… or even one-to-millions (as in the case of online webinars).
As I shared in a previous blog post, the fear of public speaking is the #1 greatest fear most people have – it even trumps fear of spiders, heights, the dark, or fear of death.
Whether it’s speaking to a camera, a crowd, or one-on-one, most people just have a fear of public speaking because most of the time, they’re afraid to look silly or make mistakes.
But you need to conquer this fear. If you can overcome the fear of speaking in public, it can really make a huge difference in your life.
Allow me to share with you my proven process on how to deliver a world-class presentation.
How To Deliver a World-Class Presentation
The secret behind a successful presentation is for you to really nail the first 5 minutes of it.
Understand that the first 5 minutes of your presentation (whether it’s a webinar, or whether you’re speaking live to thousands of people) is absolutely CRUCIAL. If you can get the first 5 minutes right, you’ll get the entire presentation right.
The reason the first 5 minutes is so important is because this is the time when you are most nervous, and the crowd is most skeptical of you.
So here is my proven process on how you can nail the first 5 minutes:
1. Get their attention.
The first thing to do is to get people’s attention, and the easiest way to do that? Ask a question.
Why?
Because the person who asks a question is always the one who is in control.
You want to ask a question in order to allow yourself to take control of the entire room.
Here are some examples of good opening questions that I use in my presentations:
- “How many of you would like to have more income in your lives?”
- “Have you ever woke up in the morning feeling tired?”
- “By a show of hands, how many of you would like to learn how to build an online business?”
Asking questions will get people to raise their hand, and engage with you.
So that’s the best way to open up your presentation: By asking a question or two.
2. Introduce your name and topic.
Rather than starting with your name, ask a question first, and then mention your name and the topic you’ll be speaking on.
For example, after opening with a question, I would say something like: “My name is Peng Joon and today I’m going to share with you how you can build an online business.”
3. Acknowledge your audience.
After introducing your name and topic, the next step is to acknowledge your audience and thank them for being here.
Remember that these are people who have taken time out of their schedule to be here. They’re most likely sitting there wondering if they made the right decision to come and listen to you.
So you want to thank and acknowledge them for that, and give them reassurance that they did indeed make the right choice to be here with you today.
4. Mention the main takeaways.
Give your audience up to 3 main takeaways, or the 3 main points of your topic.
You don’t need to start teaching, just briefly sum up the main ideas of your presentation.
5. Introduce yourself.
Once the audience is feeling more reassured that they do want to be here listening to you, then you may proceed to introduce yourself and share your story with them.
Tell them: “I would like to share with you my story and how it all began.”
And that’s pretty much the entire flow. Simple, right?
Summary:
Here’s how the flow goes:
- Ask a question – Take control of the room and get their attention.
- Your name and the topic
- Acknowledge people and thank them for being there.
- Give them 3 main takeaways.
- Tell them your story – How you ended up doing what you are currently doing.
If you follow this flow, you’ll always be able to deliver a world-class presentation, as well as master one of the most important skills in life: Communication.
