Working from home, doing events, and constantly telling people that’s possible doing all these working from home, people thought that the whole notion was relatively impossible. Read more to discover how you can make it happen when you understand these three crucial skill sets.
- Identify Blue Ocean In A Red Ocean
Before discovering what these skill sets are, the first thing you need to understand is that whatever market, industry, or niche that you wanna go into, you have to identify the blue ocean. The way to explain what the blue ocean is is to think about the market that you want to go into, and chances are it’s gonna be highly competitive. One of the things that marketers always say is that you should avoid going into a highly competitive market. I believe that is not the full picture because going into an untapped market is like saying you want to have no competition, but if you do, there would be no money there either.
The first skill set that you should have is the ability to spot a blue ocean in a red ocean. When I started my company providing digital marketing services, I didn’t realize that I was going into a highly competitive market where yes, there’s a lot of money you can make there but it’s extremely red ocean. So what we did was to either niche down or specialize, and that’s what we did. Rather than saying we were going to take on just anybody that’s interested in digital marketing, we intended to work with high level quality clients if they are in a specific market.
A very common thing that people might say is I want to be able to serve more people and be generic so that I can make more money by targeting more people. But what people don’t realize is that it doesn’t strengthen you, it actually weakens you, and the reason why it weakens you is because you’re being a generalist and most generalists are broke.
The way you figure out this blue ocean in a red ocean, the first is to niche down and you be specific. So when a client asks what makes you different, your answer would be because you specialize in helping that specific business, you would help them get more leads, and that you understand that industry’s specific struggles and pain points. You become the only logical choice because you niched down and became specific with a target market and a target audience.
When we came out with my book titled Million Dollar Ads, I classified Facebook ads as a saturated red ocean because a person can literally go on YouTube and they could get 100,000 videos talking about Facebook ads. The blue ocean we figured out is coming up with a Facebook course and compiled all of the ads where we spent millions of dollars on as well as giving them the exact ads, so that people can model, copy, fill in the blanks, and basically create ads based on all of our different frameworks. This is how we found the blue ocean, by having some sort of unique mechanism, even though it’s about Facebook ads and it’s a course and it’s training on Facebook.
- Messaging
Messaging is literally the people that can help any business form and craft a better message. For example, my writers help us with our Facebook ads copy, social media copy, emails, etc, so those are considered copywriting. Start thinking about which skill set resonates most with you and start practicing, learning, and mastering your craft. Next is to think about more creatives, for example, video production, editing, etc. This is what helps amplify the messaging of a business.
Behind all my videos and ads, there is a lot of work and a lot of things that go behind the scenes for a production of anything. So the next skill set that you should be thinking about if you want to be able to work from home and secure a skillset that is in demand, is something that you can either do yourself or for somebody else and start charging people as a freelancer.
There are low level skill sets and then there are high level skill sets. When I say video editing, I’m not talking about video editing that a person can outsource for cheap or when I say copywriting, I’m not talking about writing blog posts, etc. I’m talking about skill sets that have direct correlation with the conversion of a sales process. A conversion is something that either turns that thing into a lead or turns the lead into a sale. Hence why I’ve mentioned, blog posts for a business might not necessarily lead to monetization so a business owner cannot see why they might want to invest in somebody who possesses that skill set.
However, if you are a copywriter, writing ads, writing nurturing emails that leads to a sale, or writing scripts for a sales video, etc, directly correlates to conversions, therefore you can start charging for this. Similarly for video editing, it’s not just about the normal edits but also think about the strategy behind it and how it would lead to a call to action. How would this video tell a story where it’s engaging and have people retain on this video that leads to an opt in, and how does that opt in lead to a sale?
- Advertisements
Under the marketing team, this will most likely be the sales process, for example Facebook, Instagram, YouTube ads, etc. If you take a look at every business right now, every business that needs to pivot, how to get more leads, how to get more visibility, they literally have to be good in advertising. It’s not just about advertising on radio, TV, newspaper, magazine, banner ads, but rather on the newer ads that are on major social media sites, like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram.
What the team does is getting more leads through Direct Response. Think about the skill set of utilizing ads for whatever platform. Whether it’s Facebook, Google, or YouTube ads, spend time not just learning but mastering the craft. Focus your time on watching a training on YouTube or Facebook ads, and start offering services to that one particular segment. Whether it’s one specific niche or industry, learn and in return teach them how they can take things remotely right now and pivot.
That is how you can start utilizing, building up a skill set, and mastering a skill set that is going to be timeless and relevant even after this whole crisis is over. That’s how you protect yourself during these times and possibly in the future. These are literally the three skill sets that I would utilize if I were to start all over again that I know will not just build my business well but scale it to a whole new level.
